Beginner 5K Training Schedule

8-Week Training Plan

This 8-week schedule is designed to help beginning runners build the fitness and confidence needed to complete a 5K at a comfortable pace.

Consistency Is the Key
The goal is to exercise four days each week and gradually increase the amount of running you can comfortably complete. Start at an easy pace that you can maintain throughout each workout. The training becomes more challenging as the weeks progress, so follow the schedule and avoid doing too much too soon.

Saturday Is Your Key Run
Begin each Saturday workout with a 5-minute walking warm-up. After completing the scheduled run, finish with another 5 minutes of easy walking to cool down.

From 1.5 Miles to Your First 5K

You don’t need to run the full 3.1-mile distance during training. By gradually increasing your Saturday run and consistently completing your weekday workouts, you’ll build the endurance you need to reach the finish line.

1
Keep the Pace Comfortable
Start slowly. Your pace should feel comfortable enough that you can maintain it throughout the workout. Speed isn’t the goal—building endurance is.

2
Walking Is Part of the Plan
Don’t worry about taking walking breaks during your run/walk workouts. Alternating running and walking is an effective way to gradually build fitness and endurance.

3
Respect Your Rest Days
Rest days give your body time to recover and adapt to your training. More running isn’t always better, especially when you’re just getting started.

4
Have Fun on Race Day
Your first 5K is about completing the distance and enjoying the experience. Start at a comfortable pace, take in the atmosphere and celebrate when you cross the finish line.

You’re Ready for 3.1
Stay consistent, keep your pace comfortable and enjoy your first 5K.
