Jerry Lawson

Jerry Lawson is our most illustrious employee. His running achievements have been well documented over the years, even in places like Runner’s World magazine. In 1996 he tied the American record in the marathon and in 1997 broke it with a clocking of 2 hours 9 minutes and 35 seconds, a time that stood for two years until it was broken by a mere two seconds.

Jerry is the manager of the Baymeadows Road 1st Place Sports store and has been with us, off and on, for 14 years, he has been a runner for twice that.

Originally from upstate New York, near Syracuse, he ran cross-country and track in high school and was a member of the school’s cross-country team when it won the state championship. He attended Mohawk Valley Community College where he was a multiple All-American. Later, at Boston University he became an NCAA All-American in the 10,000 meters.

In 1989 Jerry came to Jacksonville to attend the University of North Florida but never ran for them. When his time there came to an end, he said, “I became a Roads Scholar.”

His first local road race was the 1989 Gate River Run. Later that year he recorded his first win in his adopted hometown at the Outback Distance Classic. He had a string of victories afterwards and now that he is a 43-year old Masters runner his plan is to do the same.

Aside from managing the store, running 100 miles a week and being a father to his 19-month old twins and 10-year old daughter, he plans to become a coach and in September will launch his new marathon training class to help others achieve their goals.
